A wonderful lady committed to our community leaving an important legacy and example of just what can be done with a bit of hard work and using a total stakeholder approach.
Well done Merrilyn, we will miss you.
RIP my friend
(Greetings to the family) Kia ora koutou, te whanau. There are many proverbs used in Maoridom to describe significant events and the one I chose for this wonderful friend, co-worker, aunty, mother, grandmother, beloved community leader and elder . It is this one: “Kua hinga he totara i te wao nui a Tane”. It is used in respect and honour of a mighty member of the community who has passed from this life to the next. Translated, this ancient proverb says: A totara (a mighty native tree of NZ) has fallen in the forest of Tane (God of the Forest). This is indeed true of Aunty who along with her husband worked tirelessly to better the lives of their Yamaji people and the Geraldton, Midwest community at large. They along with other Yamaji elders, were responsible for starting Geraldton Street Work Aboriginal Corporation. RIP Aunty – God speed! Arohanui Maringi Querino and family.
