I had the pleasure of serving with Drew at Balcombe and the Australian Army Band Adelaide, he was always kind and thoughtful with all who worked alongside him. He performed the Bassoon – probably the most challenging of all instruments, always contributing his part to the very best of his ability, much more difficult than my instrument, the saxophone. He also formed a bond with the then Officer in Command, Captain Laurie Young, where Drew became his personal assistant, driver and at times bodyguard! ( lol ) I will always remember him as a true gentleman and a genuinely kind soul who gave his everything to the job at hand, a mate you could always rely on. We will miss you Drew.

I first met Drew in early 1979 when he arrived at our hut in Delta Company, AAS. From the outset, he was one of the kindest and most caring people I had ever met.

We served together at AAS and later at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion for several years. After Army life, we stayed in only rare contact as this was long before the days of the internet and social media.

I last saw Drew a few years ago when I was conducting a concert with WASO in Perth. We caught up for drinks, and it was a wonderful reunion – full of exaggerated stories, fond memories, and a great deal of laughter.

Rest well, my friend.

A great send off and celebration of Drew’s life. Selfless and others first, was a common theme about Drew and I got to spend a couple of days with him after he drove from Geraldton to Albury to visit a mate in need is just another example. A Gentleman and ‘Going Home’ will now forever have meaning, RIP mate and condolences to all the family

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and my friend Drew “Hoss” Morton. Words are not enough for the feelings of despair I experienced when I was informed of his passing. I can only imagine the experience of the profound loss you have been enduring this past month. The memories of Hoss during the times I was in his company are are quite vivid and cause a smile in reflection of the times we had in our life. Many a beer was enjoyed in our younger days during our time in the Army. You were an astounding personality and were loved and respected by all of us that enjoyed your company. Rest in Peace my friend and I’m sure there will be a beer waiting. My heart goes out to Lorraine and your Family. There are many a splendored memory you have given us and we will cherish them.
